Case Study: A Hillside Haven in Palos Verdes – Designed & Built by Rosewood Landscape

When a young family in Palos Verdes Estates reached out to Rosewood Landscape, they had one goal: turn their steep, underused hillside yard into a multi-functional outdoor retreat—something beautiful, usable, and distinctly “California.”

The Challenge

The property had stunning views of the ocean but lacked usable space. It sloped hard, had poor drainage, and was covered in patchy grass and old shrubs. The homeowners wanted:

  • A flat area for their kids to play

  • A modern fire pit/lounge zone

  • Drought-tolerant planting

  • Something clean, coastal, and low-maintenance

  • And ideally, everything ready before their summer party

The Rosewood Solution

Rosewood’s design + build team got to work fast. They drafted a concept that terraced the yard into three functional zones:

  1. Upper Lounge Deck – Featuring IPE wood, a custom gas fire feature, and integrated seating with LED lighting.

  2. Mid-Level Lawn – A flat artificial turf area perfect for kids, dogs, and weekend cornhole.

  3. Lower Garden Pathway – Surrounded by California natives like lavender, salvia, and agave, bordered by sleek stone retaining walls.

They also added smart irrigation, outdoor lighting, and a drainage system to solve long-standing water issues.

The Build

Despite grading challenges and weather delays, the Rosewood crew stayed ahead of schedule. Their communication was on point, with daily progress updates and seamless coordination with the homeowner’s interior designer for material match.

Total timeline: 6.5 weeks from start to finish.
